Livingston is one of the few towns left in the Rocky Mountains
that has preserved its old west charm there are no chain restaurants
here while evolving into a lively cultural center. Countless writer
and artists have made Livingston and the Paradise Valley their home,
yet it has not given way to the reckless development that has
afflicted Vail, Aspen, Sun Valley, and other western resort towns.
Though it appears that they may, property values have yet to
skyrocket out of control. (At the end of 2004, US News and World
Report 2004 ranked Livingston one of the ten best places in the USA
to own a second home.)
Though the Murray was converted to condos in 2002, the hotel feel
remains. The hotel bar is still in operation downstairs, and the
restaurant in the Murray building is thriving as the Second Street
Bistro. Artist Russell Chatham's Livingston Bar and Grill also
offers fine dining one block away. Quiet, but legendary
destination's such as the charming, unintentionally retro Owl Lounge
where local writer's books line the shelves behind the bar is just a
few doors down. Livingston's bohemian, artist/writer history dates
back to nearly the middle of the last century. Jimmy Buffet's song
"Livingston Saturday Nights" reminisces about the early seventies
here.
